Making precious metals cheap: A sonoelectrochemical – Hydrodynamic cavitation method to recycle platinum group metals from spent automotive catalysts

چکیده
Platinum group metals, such as Pd and Pt, found in three-way catalyst converters were recycled a two-step method: hydrodynamic cavitation followed by sonoelectrochemical dissolution. High shear forces obtained using convergent nozzle with throat diameter of 0.2 mm, feeded plunger pump at pressure 60 MPa. Cavitating submerged jets acted locally on the water dispersed waste catalyst. As-obtained samples analyzed scanning electron microscopy transmission microscopy. Electron initial sample showed that round shaped Pt nanoparticles randomly distributed Al 2 O 3 matrix. Cavitated show two zones which partially completely separated from cordierite. The separates cordierite leading to an apparent increase concentrations 9% 34% respectively. Conventional electrochemistry dissolution 20% 1 h. To further accelerate dissolution, sonotrode operating 20 kHz 75 W was placed inside electrochemical cell order mass transport obtain high rates. Indeed, results 40% available can be just In absence conventional less than 10% is recovered cost analysis 10 EUR per g 5 times smaller their current market price.

Precious Metals in Automotive Technology: An Unsolvable Depletion Problem?
Since the second half of the 20th century, various devices have been developed in order to reduce the emissions of harmful substances at the exhaust pipe of combustion engines. In the automotive field, the most diffuse and best known device of this kind is the “three way” catalytic converter for engines using the Otto cycle designed to abate the emissions of carbon monoxide, nitrogen oxides and...
متن کاملRecycling of Precious Metals from E-scrap
Recovery of gold and other valuable metals from electronic scrap involves a complex metallurgical flow sheet and requires state-of-the-art recovery technologies that are available in large-scale, integrated smelter and refinery operations. At the end of their use, electronic and other electrical product scrap offer an important recycling potential for the secondary supply of gold and silver...

Ultrasonically-enhanced mass transport was exploited to increase preconcentration efficiency in anodic stripping voltammetry. We developed a Nafion-coated mercury thin-film working electrode which is stable under ultrasonic irradiation, making it possible to achieve very low limits of detection for relatively short preconcentration times. This allows the investigation of a variety of biological...
